One of the reasons why I began this post series, originating on my massage therapy website at http://www.abundanthealthleague.com/ was to help educate the public on the various forms of massage modalities. I think it's important not only for a client to understand the therapy they are going in for, but to understand ahead of time what can be expected. I talked to a good friend recently who told me all about her first massage. She went to home of a friend who had someone there doing massages. As far as my friend understood, massage was just something to relax the muscles and you get off the table feeling great and go back to your business.
During the course of this session, the therapist found many tight areas on my friend and worked diligently to get the problem areas fixed. The other part of this story is that this was my friend's first massage. As a therapist I know how much I want to solve every issue I encounter to show my client I am worth their time as well. What I want my clients to know however, is that some issues may take several visits. and sometimes they may not feel completely different after the first visit.
When a client is on the table, they need to remember that they are still in charge of the situation. A good therapist will listen and give advice back. In the case of my friend, she really didn't want a deep tissue session for her first go round and she didn't really go into the session thinking she was going to be sick for two days afteward. The biggest thing that any client needs to know is that there is no reason for you to be hurt in a massage session. If your therapist is going to deep let them know. Deeper isn't always better and sometimes the therapist needs a heads up.
Communication between therapist and client is very important to make sure you have a massage session you want and allow you to be able to want to do again.
